Pig Island is total swill. Well, not quite, but I could not resist the temptation for a pun. Anyway, it reads like a Prime Suspect script at best, with cringemaking pop culture references scattered with scant regard for placement (McFly badge? Avril Lavigne shirt? Massice Attack CD?) and annoying supposedly tantasising asides to the audience of the horror to come.

A real shame as "Birdman" in particular was great - a rollicking, hectic, queasy South London crime novel of the highest order - like Derek Raymond with an eye on the Hollywood film rights.

This reads like it was written on autopilot.
